Learn how to use the search features in Audience Finder to discover the best targeting options for your Meta ad campaigns.
Interest Search
The Interests tab lets you search Meta's interest targeting database. These are based on what users engage with on Facebook and Instagram.
How to Search
- Click the Interests tab
- Type a keyword (e.g., "fitness", "cooking", "technology")
- Results appear automatically as you type (debounced)
- Each result shows the interest name and estimated audience size
Understanding Results
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Name | The official Meta interest name |
| Audience Size | Estimated monthly active users matching this interest |
| ID | Meta's internal targeting ID (used in API calls) |
Example Searches
| Keyword | Example Results |
|---|---|
| "fitness" | Fitness and wellness, Physical fitness, Gym, CrossFit |
| "cooking" | Cooking, Recipes, Food and cooking, Baking |
| "ecommerce" | Online shopping, E-commerce, Shopify, Drop shipping |
Pro tip: Try broader terms first, then narrow down. Searching "yoga" returns more specific options than "exercise".
Behavior Search
The Behaviors tab searches Meta's behavioral targeting categories. These are based on real-world purchase activity and device usage.
Types of Behaviors
| Category | Examples |
|---|---|
| Purchase Behavior | Engaged shoppers, Online buyers |
| Device Usage | iPhone users, Android users, Tablet owners |
| Travel | Frequent travelers, Business travelers |
| Business | Small business owners, Technology early adopters |
How to Search
- Click the Behaviors tab
- Type a keyword (e.g., "shoppers", "travel", "business")
- Browse results showing behavior name and audience size
- Click to add to your Audience Builder
Pro tip: Behaviors often indicate stronger purchase intent than interests. "Engaged shoppers" reaches users who have recently clicked "Shop Now" on Facebook ads.
Location Search
The Locations tab helps you find geographic targeting options including cities, regions, and countries.
Location Types
| Type | Description | Example |
|---|---|---|
| City | Individual cities and metro areas | Mumbai, Delhi, New York |
| Region | States, provinces, or administrative regions | Maharashtra, California |
| Country | Entire countries | India, United States |
How to Search
- Click the Locations tab
- Type a city, region, or country name
- Results show location name, type, and country
- Click to add to your Audience Builder
Audience Builder Panel
The right-side panel aggregates all your selected targeting options.
Panel Components
| Component | Description |
|---|---|

| Age Range | Slider or inputs for min/max age (18-65+) |
| Gender | All, Male, or Female selection |
| Reach Estimate | Live audience size based on combined targeting |
Managing Selections
- Click the X on any chip to remove it
- Use Clear All to reset the entire audience
- Reach estimate updates automatically when you modify selections
Reach Estimate
The reach estimate shows the approximate audience size for your combined targeting selections.
Requirements
| Requirement | Details |
|---|---|
| Meta Account | Must have a connected Meta Ads account |
| At Least 1 Target | Need at least one interest, behavior, or location |
How It Works
- The system sends your targeting spec to Meta's Reach Estimate API
- Meta returns an estimated audience size range
- The estimate updates in real-time as you modify targeting
Note: Reach estimates are approximate and can vary. They represent potential reach, not guaranteed impressions.
Search Tips
Best Practices
| Tip | Why |
|---|---|
| Start broad, then narrow | "Marketing" → "Digital marketing" → "Social media marketing" |
| Combine interests + behaviors | Interests show affinity; behaviors show intent |
| Check audience sizes | Very small audiences (< 100K) may underperform |
| Use multiple locations | Target several cities instead of one for better reach |
| Save good audiences | Click Save to store audiences you can reuse later |
Common Mistakes
| Mistake | Better Approach |
|---|---|
| Too many interests | Pick 5-10 strong interests, not 50 weak ones |
| Ignoring behaviors | Behaviors often convert better than interests alone |
| Too narrow age range | Start with 25-55, then narrow based on data |
| Single city targeting | Target multiple cities or regions for scale |
Key Takeaways
- 1Search interests by keyword to find related Meta targeting options
- 2Discover behavioral targeting for purchase intent and device usage
- 3Find cities, regions, and countries for geographic targeting
